One of the advantages of being a non-profit company is we can make our own decisions based on our own “rules”. Our policies are a lot more renter friendly than you might believe.
We got involved in low income and affordable housing because we saw the enormous need for people to have decent places to live. There were also a bunch of distressed houses and other properties sitting around that needed saving. Our skills were remodeling distressed houses. We put two and two together and formed Old Glory.
We handle our own property management because it lets us be hands-on and direct. We can make decisions other property rental companies can’t or won’t, like giving people coming out of prison a chance at getting their lives back together. Or letting a family rent when the couple just got back to work after months of lay-off. It also means that you deal directly with the people who own the property, not just collect fees off it.
That means we care when your toilet stops up, your stove has a problem, or the heat goes out and it is winter. We take pride in our relationships with our renters.
At Old Glory we recognize that life sometimes is simply not fair.
This has been especially true in the last year with the health crisis worldwide. We have solid business sense and human compassion for people who simply did not get a fair shake in life and need a hand up. We will rent to the disabled and seniors on fixed income, veterans who are struggling to re-enter “regular” life, and parents who are trying to recover from job loss and other issues. We know that there are good people out there who just need a break, and as much as possible, we try to work with them.
Our homes are rented at fair, low-income prices but our homes are good, solid, well rebuilt homes. We believe each and every person deserves to be treated with respect and dignity, and the home we rent them should reflect that as well.
One of the toughest things you can go through, if you need to find another rental residence, is an eviction.
Most people do not know there is a national registry for evictions and rental/leasing issues, and regular properties nearly all use those reports. The resulting decisions are rarely in favor of the person needing a home. Evictions happen for many reasons, not just not paying over a long period of time. Sometimes they are forced on people when the property is sold. Other times the owners change and rents are drastically increased. Maybe you or a loved one got seriously ill and ended up with insurmountable medical bills.
Most rental companies will take your application fee and then tell you “no way” when they find out you have an eviction. We don’t handle our clients that way at Old Glory. We look at each person as an individual case. We will talk to you and let you verify information for us, and explain what happened. We will not charge you an exorbitant fee to do it, either, or one so you can rent from us.
Since we handle our own property management, we try to treat people like we would like to be treated, with honesty and compassion.
